How To Train a Dog To Be Comfortable With an Invisible Dog Fence

June 6, 2009

Take your time to train your dog or dogs, to be at ease with the invisible dog fence. The extra effort you put in at the beginning will prove to be very beneficial in the future. The good thing about a PetSafe invisible dog fence is that they give you step by step instructions. The instructions give you a 14 day training plan and advise you to be patient with your dog and have fun with it.

The instructions suggest you spend about 16 mins a day training and playing with your dog. Spending this time with your pet every day for fourteen days, working through the instructions, will result in having a well adjusted and very happy pet dog. After the 2 weeks, you want your pet to be comfortable with the invisible dog fence, if it isn’t then you may want to continue with it a bit longer.

If at any time your dog is demonstrating signs of stress, which can include timid behaviors, ears back and not wanting to walk outdoors, then put on hold the training session with the invisible dog fence. Play with your dog well away from the boundary and just have a bit of fun with him. When he is behaving normally again, then continue the training.

You will use boundary flags as part of the training. These flags are positioned around the boundary so you and your dog can see where the invisible dog fence is. As the end of the training session draws near, you want to be within ten feet of the flags, and to start playing with your dog. You always want to end on a high note. You want to be able to play with him and make sure he is happy being in that spot.

Before crossing the border of the invisible dog fence, make sure you take the collar off, else your dog will get a shock. Should the dog training be going faster than the 14 day plan, you still need to continue with it for the full 14 days. The reason why you want to stick with it is because repetition underpins the training and is extremely important. While you are training your pet, try not to use other methods for containing your dog as this will only make him feel bewildered.

What Size Investment Am I Looking At For A Dog fence?

June 4, 2009

The price of a dog fence will range in cost depending on who the manufacturer is and its features. You can get an indoor and outdoor dog fence, and you can get an underground and a wireless fence.

PetSafe and Innotek are the leading indoor dog fence brands. There is a big difference in price with PetSafe at $110.00 and Innotek coming in at $70.00. Now, at first glance it looks like it would make sense to go for the Innotek unit. However, Innotek only produce one model which fits all, whereas the PetSafe unit, they manufacture different units for different types of dog.

The three different indoor dog fences PetSafe manufacture are for hard to train dogs, a deluxe system for use with most dogs and a standard dog fence for cats and very small dogs. By investing in a more expensive system, you can tailor it more to your dog and increase the effectiveness of the fence. In contrast to the Innotek product which gives you no choice and so reduces its chance of working.

When it comes to the back yard, PetSafe manufactures an outdoor wireless fence, which Innotek have yet to do. The wireless dog fence is very popular because you can create a fence instantly. To set up the wireless fence, you position the transmitter in the centre of where you want your fence to be and you switch it on. The boundary area can be adjusted to suit your back yard, you can adjust it anywhere from thirty to one hundred and eighty feet in diameter. It is light weight and easily carried around so you can take it on holidays with you and create an invisible fence for your dog, anywhere you go.

The other option to a wireless fence is the underground dog fence. With the underground fence; you create a boundary by laying down a wire. An underground dog fence has the benefit of producing a fence which is much bigger than the wireless fence and you can make it any shape you want. The leading suppliers of the underground invisible dog fence are Innotek and PetSafe.

The PetSafe underground dog fence ranges between $119 and $160 and the Innotek one size fits all is $90. The main difference between PetSafe and Innotek is that the PetSafe dog fence can create a boundary covering an area of twenty five acres and the Innotek model only covers up to five acres. The PetSafe dog fence also gives you 3 models to choose from; stubborn, deluxe and standard.

Is It Worth Getting The PetSafe Fence?

June 2, 2009

If you have a dog that likes to escape from your yard or you wish to contain your dog within a specified area then you will not go far wrong with getting a PetSafe fence. As far as we are concerned, the PetSafe fence is the must have device for containing your dog in the back yard. The question is; is it right for your dog?

The first thing you should know is that if you have a very aggressive pet then it is recommended that you do not use a PetSafe fence or any type of electronic training device on you animal. If you find yourself with an aggressive dog or are not sure about the use of a fence then seek advice from your veterinary clinic or a dog trainer.

The second point you need to beware of is that the PetSafe fence receiver collar can irritate your dog’s neck and you should check for this on a regular basis. If you can see skin irritation then it is recommended you hold back from putting the receiver collar on your dog until the irritation is gone. To reduce the possibility of skin irritation, clean the probes on a regular basis, make sure they are not loose and when putting the collar on, check you can get one finger between it and your dogs neck. If the irritation lasts more than 48 hours then see your vet.

You can get different collars for different sizes of dogs. For example, you can get a collar for dogs weighing over 5 pounds, 8 pounds and 20 pounds. Your dog must also be at least 26 weeks old. With the wireless fence you only get one option. If your dog is less than 6 months of age, it doesn’t understand why they are being told off, this can create problems, and they will not take to the training. This will result in the training being ineffective and the fence no use.

Different dogs have different personalities, and so the PetSafe fence must be able to cope with all dog types. These fences have a range of settings to cater for the following personalities:

• Timid

• Timid or Standard

• Standard Energy

• Standard or High Energy

• High Energy

Being able to effectively contain your dog is only one half of the advantage of a PetSafe wireless fence, the other half is the backup and support you get if you purchase the fence from Radio Fence as they give you sixty days to decide if it is for your dog, if not you can return it, plus you get a lifetime warranty on parts. Does A Wireless Fence Harm Dogs?

May 27, 2009

No, not all wireless fences are safe. I would be very wary of purchasing a cheap imported wireless fence from china. One problem is that interference from other devices could trigger them to go off. Many of these cheap imported electronic products don’t use up-to-date technology in their design or manufacture, and this usually means they do not work as intended which means they may harm my pet dog.

However, a PetSafe or Innotek wireless fence is perfectly safe if you read and follow the instructions; your dog weighs over 8lb and is older than 6 months. They can be used both indoors and outdoors and are very easy to install.

If your dog tends to jump over your fence or burrows a hole underneath it then a wireless fence will solve this problem. It can also save you a lot of money. If you don’t get a wireless fence, the other thing you can do is install a new six foot high fence and this is a very expensive alternative solution. With a typical 6 foot high fence you still have the problem of stopping your dog from digging underneath it.

No need to be concerned about how you are going to train your dog to use the new wireless fence because the information you get with a PetSafe fence is very good. The training covers a fourteen day period and leaves no stone unturned. The training includes three main stages, which are flag awareness, coping with distractions and unleashed supervision. Training your pet dog to turn a blind eye to things happening outside the wireless fence is one the things that makes this training so special.

To train and to test the training in the distraction phase can include putting a hot dog on the floor or have a family member walk past, it takes a few days for your dog to learn but it is surprising at how quick it picks up what it can and cannot do. I think this part of the training really demonstrates how effective a wireless fence can be.
